Succulents prefer a "soak and dry" schedule. Rather than giving small sips of water daily, saturate the soil completely and let it dry out completely before watering again.

Check the Soil: Push your finger 3-5cm deep into the pot's soil. If it is bone-dry, it's time to water.
Winter Rest: Most succulents go dormant during South Africa's winter. Reduce watering to once every 4-6 weeks during cold months.
Avoid Wet Leaves: Pour water directly onto the soil, not over the succulent crown to prevent rot.

Succulents need ample light to maintain their compact shapes and vivid pastel colors. Too little light causes them to stretch out (etiolate) and fade to a dull green.

Ideale Sonblootstelling: 4-6 uur oggendson is die beste. Warm middagson in Vanderbijlpark se somer kan delikate rosette brand. Ideal Sun Exposure: 4-6 hours of morning sun is ideal. Hot afternoon sun in Vanderbijlpark summer can sunburn sensitive rosettes.
Sunburn Protection: Keep Echeverias under 30% shade cloth or in places that get dappled shade from midday onwards.
Euphorbias: Many Euphorbias love direct sun and will develop beautiful patterns and colors when exposed to bright rays.

Grond & Potte Soil & Pots

Normal potting soil holds onto moisture for too long, which suffocates succulent roots and leads to rot. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable for success.

The Ideal Mix: Combine 1 part potting soil with 1 part coarse river sand and 1 part pumice or perlite.
Terracotta Pots: Clay terracotta is porous and helps moisture evaporate from the soil faster. Always ensure pots have drainage holes.

Suid-Afrikaanse Winters South African Winters

Vanderbijlpark experiences dry winters but can get heavy frost, which freezes the water inside soft succulent leaves and causes fatal cell rupture.

Frost Protection: Keep delicate rosettes under cover, on patios, or cover them with frost cloth on freezing winter nights.
Hardy Species: Many South African native Aloes, Cotyledons, and specific hardy Euphorbias can withstand local winter frost easily.
